Bergen along the 4th stage, Furedalen, Myrdalsvatnet to Søylen

This is the 4th stage of the Bergen Anniversary Trail along the length of the route.

The hike starts at Myrdalsvannet, which is a popular hiking area. The first 1.5 km. is on a gravel road. Go up the long hill of the gravel road until you see a sign on the right marked “Jubileumsstien”. Now the gravel road ends and the hike turns onto a path. It is signposted with red wooden pegs along the entire route. Follow the path into Stordalen. It is quite soft in some places, but if you walk on the right side of the path you can avoid the worst parts.

After about 300 meters, the path goes to the right up a ravine. Here it is rocky and slippery because of the stream that flows down the ravine. Follow the path east where it turns north again with Stordalsfjellet on the left. You will come to a sign marked “Skardalsfjellet”, and here you should just go straight ahead towards Furedalen.  

NB: I don't know why it's marked Skardalsfjellet. Map of Norway states that the mountains in the area are called Stordalsfjellet and Skavdalsfjellet.

You will see that the terrain and trees in the area are quite dead. This is due to a forest fire that raged in 2003.   

Follow the valley north on the left side of the large bog. After the bog, the path turns to the right side of the valley floor and leads you up the mountainside just below the high-voltage pylons. At the top, follow the ridge north until it begins to lead you down towards Furedalen. You can see Furedalsvannet on the right. Then follow the path along the water on the left. There are many marshy areas here, so expect to get your feet wet if you don't have shoes that go above the ankle.  

At the end of the water, a little way down the valley, you crossed the river on a primitive stone bridge. Then follow the marked path until you come down to Hardangerveien.
