Vinterhelg på Kvamskogen – 3 anbefalte skiturer

Kvamskogen is the winter classic for people from Bergen who want to quickly reach the mountains. In less than an hour by car from Bergen, you are in the snowy landscape, surrounded by forests, peaks, and good skiing terrain.

The ski season at Kvamskogen can vary, but in good winters it lasts from December all the way to May. This winter weekend we have planned three different ski tours: a leisurely panoramic round trip on Friday, a long and challenging summit tour to Tveitakvitingen on Saturday, and a concluding trip to Geitafjellet on Sunday before returning to Bergen.

Recommended accommodation: Kvamseter Lodge

Kvamseter Lodge på Kvamskogen

Kvamseter Lodge is located in Eikedalen at Kvamskogen, about a 50-minute drive from Bergen. Here you stay in a snow-safe mountain terrain, with groomed ski trails right outside the door, summit tours, and Eikedalen ski center nearby. The accommodation has rooms in various categories, cozy common areas, a sauna, and good opportunities for social evenings after long ski days.

Hiking tips day by day

Day 1: Kvamskogen Panorama – gentle start to the weekend

Round trip with a gentle start and magnificent views over Kvamskogen.

Start the winter weekend with a calm, but beautiful panoramic round trip. Drive to the parking lot at Jonshøgdi, which is the starting point for the Kvamskogen Panorama ski tour. It is also possible to put on skis and go directly in the groomed ski tracks from Eikedalen to Jonshøgdi – making the trip a few kilometers longer.

The round trip goes in groomed ski tracks in gentle and rolling terrain, with a steady ascent and several sections where you get wide views over Furedalen and the surrounding mountains. Especially beautiful is the view where the trail crosses the top of the ski lift at Furedalen and continues further north past Heiavatnet.

The trail is well-suited for regular cross-country skis. Along the way, you pass several places where it is natural to stop for pictures and a break, before the final part with descents to the parking lot at Jonshødi.

Distance: approx. 10 km, time: approx. 3–4 hours, Grade: Moderate

Day 2: Tveitakvitingen – the weekend's long top classic

Long day trip to Tveitakvitingen – the highest peak in the area.

On Saturday, you allocate time for the weekend's main trip: the summit hike to Tveitakvitingen at 1299 m. Drive to Furedalen for parking. The trip starts at the ski center.

This ski trip is long and demanding, and is best suited for experienced skiers in good shape. In winter, you can go both on mountain skis and with randonee equipment. The terrain varies from gentler sections at the start to steeper ascents towards the height above Stuveggen and the final section to the summit.

The reward on clear days is views in all directions – towards Hardangerfjord, Folgefonna, the mountains inland towards Voss, and the round plateaus on Kvamskogen. With a good packed lunch, an early start, and breaks along the way, this becomes a truly signature trip for the winter weekend.

Distance: approx. 19 km round trip, time: approx. 6–7 hours, Grade: Challenging

Day 3: Geitafjellet – concluding trip before returning home

Skitur mot Geitafjellet med utsikt over Myklavatnet og Kvamskogen

Varied round trip to Geitafjellet with wide views.

On Sunday, you round off the weekend with a ski trip to Geitafjellet from Kvamskogen. The trip is still challenging, but somewhat shorter than Tveitakvitingen, and is well-suited as a concluding trip before returning home.

Drive to Fureberghovden parking, which is the last parking spot before Tokagjelet

From the parking lot where you put on your skis, you first follow the groomed trail to Byrkjesete before the ascent takes you up towards Bårfjell and Storebotn. Further on, the terrain slopes more gently down and inward towards Sundvoredalen, before the trail rises again and leads you along Myklavatnet.

Distance: approx. 16 km round trip, time: approx. 4–5 hours, Grade: Challenging
