To find your way in the mountains, GPS is an excellent aid in addition to maps and compasses. Most mobile phones have built-in GPS. Therefore, many have asked how to use GPX files to show GPS tracks on the phone.

Here is a video showing how to do it. We use the app TOPO GPS Norway in our example. This is an app we have good experience with and that always shows the correct location. There are also other apps on the market that show GPS tracks. We have tried many and our conclusion is that TOPO GPS Norway is the best. If you have a GARMIN GPS, you can also transfer the GPX file to it.

On shorter mountain trips (preferably with mobile coverage), the mobile will do the job. On long trips, a Garmin GPS is preferred as it withstands cold, rain, and wind better. The advantage of using GPS is that you can see where you are on the map at any time. But with a regular map/compass, you must KNOW where you are.

Using GPS requires a bit of practice, but you quickly get used to it. If visibility in the mountains is poor, GPS can help you back on the right track, but you must not rely blindly on it so that you go over a cliff. If you are going on a long trip, it is always recommended to take a map/compass, and do not trust technology blindly.

Have a good trip!
