For å finne frem i fjellet er GPS et glimrende hjelpemiddel i tilegg til kart og kompass. De fleste mobiler har innebygget GPS. Derfor er det mange som har etterlyst hvordan man bruker GPX-filer til å vise GPS-spor på telefonen.
Here is a video showing how to do it. We use the app TOPO GPS Norway in our example. This is an app we have good experience with and that always shows the correct location. There are also other apps on the market that show GPS tracks. We have tried many and our conclusion is that TOPO GPS Norway is the best. If you have a GARMIN GPS, you can also transfer the GPX file to it.
On shorter mountain trips (preferably with mobile coverage), the mobile will do the job. On long trips, a Garmin GPS is preferred as it withstands cold, rain, and wind better. The advantage of using GPS is that you can see where you are on the map at any time. But with a regular map/compass, you must KNOW where you are.
For å bruke GPS krever det litt øvelse, men man blir fort vant til det. Er sikten i fjellet dårlig kan GPS hjelpe deg tilbake på rett spor, men du må ikke stole blindt på den så du går utfor stup. Skal du på langtur anbefales alltid å ta med kart/kompass, og ikke stol blindt på teknologien.
