From Mjølfjell to Ulvik in 2 days

The hike from Mjølfjell to Ulvik is a great two-day mountain experience between Voss and Hardanger.

With accommodation at the idyllic  The BT cabin by Vestevatnet. The trip combines a short first day, relaxed cabin life, and a longer conclusion through mountains and valley farms down to the fjord village of Ulvik.

This is a classic for those who enjoy hiking from cabin to cabin without stress – a true West Coast trip with everything from quiet mountain lakes to steep descents and views of the Hardangerfjord.

The trip is suitable for experienced hikers with normal fitness and good shoes.

Hiking tips day by day

Day 1: Mjølfjell – BT cabin

Start the hike from Mjølfjell station and follow Allmenningsvegen. Turn left between two houses and continue on the tractor road down to Raundalsvegen (the main road). Go towards Voss, and after about 100 meters, a green DNT sign shows the way to 'Ulvik / BT cabin'. Go down to the river and over the suspension bridge, turn right and follow the T-marked path along the river before it gradually turns upward in the valley towards the cabin.

The BT cabin is beautifully located at the end of the valley by Vestevatnet, with a rowing boat, simple standard, and six beds. Water is fetched from the lake and food must be brought. Perfect for a quiet evening in the mountains.

Day 2: BT cabin – Ulvik

Follow the path south along Vesetvatnet before you take a steep ascent past Jeriken to a small lake. From there, the path goes east in a valley to 'The Fall' and further south on an old driving path down Tyssedalen. Along the way, you pass waterfalls, mountain farms, and great viewpoints. The path gradually becomes flatter before you reach Søtnos and follow the road the last ~6 kilometers down to Ulvik center.

Tips before you go

• Take the train to Mjølfjell for the starting point - there is also parking down by the river before the suspension bridge.
• Book accommodation at The BT cabin in good time (limited capacity).
• Pack light, but bring windproof clothes and a map/compass or GPS.
• The path down to Ulvik can be slippery and steep - use good hiking shoes.
• From Ulvik, there is a bus further to Voss, and a train from there back towards Bergen.
