Mountain hikes in Alver and Nordhordland!

Alver is Nordhordland's large outdoor municipality – merged in 2020 from Lindås, Meland, and Radøy.

Here, coastal heath, sheltered forests, and mountain ridges with wide views meet. The variation provides local classics for families with children, airy ridge hikes, and long day hikes towards Stølsheimen. Here are five sure favorites for those planning mountain hikes in Alver.

1. Short hike to Melshovden (183 m) in Austfjorden

Melshovden 183 moh i Austfjorden – kort topptur i Alver

Cross the road at the sign 'Melshovden' and follow the clearly marked path in gently hilly forest terrain. The landscape opens up, and solid rock leads steadily up to the cairn. From the top, there is a nice view over Austfjorden with Mongstad at the end, Stallbotnen to the left, and Hindenesfjorden to the right. Return the same way.

2. Short hike to Håøytoppen (171 m)

Håøytoppen 171 moh – familievennlig tur i Alver

Start at the concrete mixing plant on Flatøy, west of Haglsund Bridge. A well-marked path over varied mountains and some wet areas leads to the top. Here you will find great views and remnants of older fortifications. An easy and family-friendly hike with a lot of history. Return the same way.

3. Mountain hike to Eldsfjellet (324 m) and the day cabin Eldsbu

Eldsfjellet 324 moh med dagsturhytta Eldsbu – utsiktstur i Alver

The trail starts just north of the parking lot at the motocross track on Rossland (see small sign). Steep start to above the tree line, where it flattens out before a final climb to the summit cairn at 324 m. At the cairn lies the day cabin Eldsbu. Feel free to extend on the marked trail to Veten (290 m) further west on the massif. Return the same way.

4. Mountain hike to Austlendingen (812 m) – 'Nordhordland's roof'

Austlendingen 812 moh – høgfjellstur i Alver

Cross the main road from the parking lot; the trail starts on the right side of the tunnel. Follow the forest path to Stegafossen and over the bridge. The forest thins out around 350 m, and the T-marked route leads in open terrain all the way to the large summit cairn. The view is extensive – not without reason is the top called 'Nordhordland's roof'. Return the same way.

Follow the T-marked path from Dyrkolbotn towards Skavlabu into Sørdalen. At Djupavatnet, take the marked route towards Sørdalsnuten; some sections are lightly trodden. From the top, you get a great view of Romarheimsfjorden, Osterøy, and the mountains in Stølsheimen. Return the same way.
