Description

Besseggen is one of Norway's most popular hikes and offers spectacular views of the majestic mountain world of Jotunheimen. The hike is demanding, but the reward is one of the country's most iconic nature experiences.

Most people start the trip with a boat trip from Gjendesheim to Memurubu, and then walk back to Gjendesheim. From Memurubu, the trail climbs steadily at first, before flattening out through slightly hilly terrain. About halfway through, you reach the most famous part of the trip: the egg itself. Here, a steep climb awaits you that requires both arm and leg strength to get up. Along the way, you are rewarded with a fantastic view of Gjende (984 m. above sea level) and the blue-green Bessvatnet (1374 m. above sea level), with an impressive difference in altitude of almost 400 meters between them.

After completing Besseggen, the trail flattens out before continuing over Veslefjellet (1743 m.) and then down towards Gjendesheim. The descent can be taxing on the knees, so it is recommended to use good shoes and possibly hiking poles to make the trip more comfortable.
