From Bergen city center, drive towards Åsane and continue over the Nordhordlandsbroen bridge to Knarvik. Drive E39 over Matrefjellet to the ferry port Oppedal. On the other side of the fjord, drive E39 to Førde and on the same road along Jølstervannet until you arrive at Byrkjelo. Here, drive right just after the grocery store over Utvikfjellet and down to Utvik.
Then drive Fv60 to Stryn. From here, drive National Road 15 along Innvikfjorden and turn right towards Grodås. Then drive past Grodås and through Hornindalen towards Hellesylt. Just before Hellesylt, turn left at the sign 'Ørsta/Øye.
Alternatively, from Byrkjelo you can drive E39 to Anda and take the ferry across to Lote. Then follow E39 along Hornindalsvatnet. It takes about the same time.
It is approximately 6-7 hours drive from Bergen.

Parking

Description

Go through the gate and over the bridge. It is well signposted. Follow the path on the right side of the river up Langesæterdalen. After approx. 1 km you will come to a crossroads.

Do not cross the river but go right where the sign 'Urkeegga' is. When you get to Litlevatnet you can choose to take a long or short walk. Since we were going home to Bergen the same day we chose the short one. It leads directly up to the egg.

The long hike goes further into the valley and up the Jenteskaret ridge which takes you up to Eggen and Maudekollen (1021 m above sea level). The difference is that on the long hike you get a longer panoramic hike on Eggen.

Up on Urkeeggen there is a good path that leads you west towards Eigilbu gapahuk. You have a panoramic view of Hjørundfjorden, Stålberget and the mountains on the other side. The walk then continues steeply down into Urkedalen. It is advisable to wear good shoes here because it can be both wet and slippery.

Many people choose to hike the opposite way to avoid the descent into Urkedalen. In terms of convenience, it is best to hike the way we have done (westwards).

Have a good trip!
